Market Overview
The Forex market opened Tuesday with heightened volatility as traders reacted to mixed global economic data, shifting risk sentiment, and fresh updates from central banks. The US Dollar (USD) remains in the spotlight, while major currency pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY experience notable swings.
The day’s moves are largely driven by central bank divergence, with investors carefully weighing the Federal Reserve’s potential interest rate path against more dovish stances from the European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of Japan (BoJ).
USD Strength Under Pressure
The US Dollar Index (DXY) slipped slightly during early European trading, falling below 103.40 after mixed US manufacturing PMI data suggested that business activity cooled in July.
However, downside pressure on the greenback remains limited as Fed officials continue to signal that rate cuts may be slower than markets anticipate.
Traders will be watching closely for this week’s Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report, which could set the tone for USD performance in the coming sessions.
Key USD Pairs Today:
-
EUR/USD is trading around 1.0960, attempting to recover from last week’s losses.
-
GBP/USD hovers near 1.2840 as the UK market awaits fresh housing and retail sales data.
-
USD/JPY is consolidating near 143.70, as BoJ’s monetary stance keeps the yen weaker against the dollar.
Euro Gains on Improved Economic Sentiment
The euro found some support this morning following stronger-than-expected Eurozone retail sales data, helping EUR/USD break a short-term resistance level. Market participants are now looking toward ECB President Lagarde’s upcoming comments for clues on monetary policy direction.
Analysts note that unless the ECB signals a firmer stance against inflation, EUR gains may be limited in the medium term.
Pound Sterling Holds Firm
The British pound is maintaining strength as UK bond yields edge higher. GBP/USD remains supported above 1.2800, but market focus is on the Bank of England’s (BoE) upcoming interest rate decision later this month.
A surprise hawkish tilt could see sterling extend gains toward 1.2950, while a softer approach may push the pair back toward 1.2700.
Yen Weakness Continues
The Japanese yen remains under pressure, with USD/JPY stabilizing above 143.50. Despite global risk-off sentiment, the BoJ’s ongoing commitment to ultra-loose monetary policy continues to weigh heavily on the yen.
Traders expect volatility later in the week when Japanese inflation and wage growth figures are released.
Commodity Currencies Edge Higher
Commodity-linked currencies like the Australian Dollar (AUD) and Canadian Dollar (CAD) gained slightly in early trading, supported by modest strength in oil and metal prices.
AUD/USD is testing the 0.6650 level, while USD/CAD remains near 1.3400 as traders await Canada’s upcoming employment data.
