XAU/USD Playbook by Day Type: Trend, Range, News-Driven (Rules, Targets, Triggers)
By FXPremiere.com — Forex, Gold, Crypto & Indices signals on Telegram since 2010.
Gold (XAU/USD) behaves differently depending on the day type. Decide the regime first, then deploy the right entry, exit, and risk rules for each FXPremiere signal. This 2025 playbook gives you quick diagnostics and ready-to-trade checklists.
Step 1 — Diagnose the Day in 3 Minutes
- Session scan: Plot Asia high/low, London first-hour range, and note NY’s first hour once open.
- VWAP & ADR: Is VWAP sloping (trend) or flat/oscillating (range)? How much of ADR is already used?
- Calendar: CPI/NFP/FOMC or big central bank speakers today? If yes → likely News-Driven.

Day Type A — Trend Day
- Signature: Early London expansion, VWAP sloping, pullbacks shallow, clean HH/HL (up) or LH/LL (down).
- Entry Triggers: Break–Retest of London level; higher low/lower high into VWAP; micro flag break.
- Stops: Beyond last confirmed swing + small Gold buffer.
- TP Ladder: TP1 at first liquidity, TP2 at measured move/ADR band, TP3 runner with structure/ATR trail.
- Rules: Add only after TP1 or new HL/LH; never fade VWAP slope; skip mean-revert unless late-day exhaustion.
Example (Uptrend): Entry: Retest of London high at 2392.50 holds SL: Under HL at 2388.80 TP1: 2398.00 | TP2: 2405.00 | TP3: 2412.00 (trail under HLs)
Day Type B — Range Day
- Signature: VWAP flat or whipsawing; price respects Asia/London box extremes; ADR usage modest.
- Entry Triggers: Liquidity sweep of a session extreme → reclaim → mean-reversion to VWAP/midline; failed break back inside range.
- Stops: Beyond sweep extreme + buffer (Gold re-tests are common).
- TP Ladder: TP1 at VWAP/mid, TP2 opposite side of box, TP3 optional extension; SL → BE after TP1.
- Rules: Half-size on first fade; increase only after confirmation. Avoid chasing breaks until a real close outside the box.
Example (Range Fade): Asia high swept at 2402.00 → close back inside Entry: 2401.60 short | SL: 2403.70 TP1: VWAP 2398.80 | TP2: Box mid 2396.50 | TP3: Asia low 2393.70
Day Type C — News-Driven
- Signature: Spreads widen around the print; first impulse often whipsaws; direction clarifies on the second move.
- Entry Triggers: Post-print Break–Retest continuation; Failed Break snapback after spike; avoid the first 60–120 seconds.
- Stops: Wider buffer than usual; count slippage risk; consider half-size.
- TP Ladder: Conservative TP1 near structure; TP2 at measured move; trail tight during pressers.
- Rules: Pre-event reduce heat ≤ 1%; if you can’t monitor, take partials or flatten into the print.
Example (Post-CPI Continuation): Break below London low holds on retest Entry: 2389.40 short | SL: 2392.10 TP1: 2386.80 | TP2: 2382.50 | TP3: 2378.20 (trail above LHs)
How to Switch Playbooks In-Session
- Range → Trend: True close outside session box + retest holds + VWAP starts to slope → switch to B/R continuation rules.
- Trend → Range: ADR exhausted early + repeated failed extensions + VWAP flattens → switch to sweep/reclaim fades.
- Any → News: 60 minutes pre-flag → shrink size, reduce heat, trade post-print structures only.
Risk & Exposure Guardrails (Copy/Paste)
- Per-trade: 0.5%–1.0% (newer traders 0.5%–0.75%).
- Theme cap (USD-long/short incl. Gold): ≤ 1.5%.
- Total heat: ≤ 2.5% (≤ 1.0% inside 24h of CPI/NFP/FOMC).
- BE rule: SL → BE after TP1 or clear structural shift.
Fast Day-Type Checklist (60 Seconds)
[ ] Asia H/L + London box drawn [ ] VWAP slope? (sloping = Trend, flat = Range) [ ] ADR used? (< 40% early → room to trend; > 70% early → risk of chop) [ ] News today? (CPI/NFP/FOMC/CB speakers) [ ] Choose playbook: Trend / Range / News-Driven
Common Pitfalls (and Fixes)
- ❌ Fading a strong VWAP slope → ✅ Only fade when VWAP flattens and ADR is stretched.
- ❌ Trading the first CPI/NFP candle → ✅ Wait 60–120s; take the post-print structure.
- ❌ Counting XAU + EUR/USD same way as independent risk → ✅ Group as USD theme; cap theme risk.
