1. The SMC Structure Vocabulary
Before identifying breaks, you must correctly identify the swing points that define the trend:
In an Uptrend (Bullish Market)
- **Higher High (HH):** A peak in price that is higher than the previous peak.
- **Higher Low (HL):** A trough in price that is higher than the previous trough.
- **Structure:** Price is making successive **HHs** and **HLs**.
In a Downtrend (Bearish Market)
- **Lower Low (LL):** A trough in price that is lower than the previous trough.
- **Lower High (LH):** A peak in price that is lower than the previous peak.
- **Structure:** Price is making successive **LLs** and **LHs**.
2. BOS: The Trend Continuation Signal
What is a Break of Structure (BOS)?
A **Break of Structure (BOS)** occurs when the price continues the existing trend by breaking past the most recent swing high (in an uptrend) or swing low (in a downtrend). It confirms the market is still following the Smart Money’s direction.
BOS Execution Logic
After a BOS, SMC traders anticipate a continuation. The entry setup is to wait for the price to retrace back to the **Order Block** or **Liquidity Void** created by the BOS impulse move. This retracement is the high-probability entry for trend continuation.

3. CHoCH: The Trend Reversal Signal
What is a Change of Character (CHoCH)?
A **Change of Character (CHoCH)** is the first definitive signal that the existing trend may be about to reverse. It occurs when the price breaks the most recent **swing low (HL) in an uptrend** or the most recent **swing high (LH) in a downtrend**.
CHoCH Execution Logic
A CHoCH is a warning, not an immediate entry. It suggests the institutional players have changed their bias. After a CHoCH, the trader waits for the price to:
- Complete the CHoCH break.
- Retrace to the **Order Block** created by the CHoCH move (the origin of the new trend’s impulse).
- Enter a trade (e.g., SELL after a bullish trend CHoCH) with a Stop-Loss placed above the high of the CHoCH Order Block.
*Key Difference:* BOS is a **continuation** confirmation; CHoCH is the **first sign of reversal** confirmation.
