Why is gold lower today?

Gold is lower because the selling that built up over the past week has not fully faded, and the metal is still trading well below its recent average. The 3.59% weekly drop and the fresh 20-day low at $4,002.00 point to a market that remains under pressure, even though the move on the day is only 0.18%.

The session range tells its own story. Gold traded between $4,002.00 and $4,044.09, a span of $42.09. It is now $26.92 above the low and $15.17 below the high, so it sits in the lower half of the range.

We do not have live Treasury yield or dollar index readings in today's data, so we will not claim what they are doing. The usual relationship is that firmer real yields and a stronger dollar weigh on non-yielding gold. Our guide to the macroeconomic drivers of gold covers how to read that link.

What is the dollar doing against the euro?

The dollar was firmer against the euro at the last available close. EUR/USD fell 0.26% to 1.1205 on Thursday (ECB reference data), a drop of 0.0029 from 1.1234.

That keeps the pair in the lower part of its 20-day range of 1.1177 to 1.1403 and below the 20-day average of 1.1248. Over the week EUR/USD is almost flat at -0.03%, so the dollar's move against the euro has been much smaller than gold's decline. In short, gold's weakness looks bigger than anything the euro pair alone would explain.

What are the key gold levels to watch today?

The main level is the $4,002.00 low, which is both today's low and the 20-day low. The levels above it are mapped from the data below.

  • $4,002.00: session and 20-day low. A sustained break below it would put gold at its weakest in the 20-day window and open a path with no recent reference.
  • $4,028.92: the current price and the first pivot. Holding above it keeps the bounce intact.
  • $4,036.10: the previous close. Reclaiming it would reverse today's small loss.
  • $4,044.09: today's high so far. A move through it would extend the rebound.
  • $4,142.65: the 20-day average, about $113.73 (2.75%) above the current price.
  • $4,211.15: the 20-day high, $182.23 above the market.

A close back above $4,044.09 would suggest the overnight dip has been absorbed. Repeated failures there, with price turning back towards $4,002.00, would show sellers are still in control. Neither outcome is certain, and the first test is likely to come around the data releases below. For a wider routine on handling these zones, see our live gold news coverage.

Which events matter for the London and New York sessions?

The next few hours are heavy with flash PMI surveys, which measure business activity and can move currencies and, through them, gold. All times are UTC.

  • 06:00 GBP Retail Sales m/m: forecast -0.1%, previous 0.5%. This has already been released, but the actual figure is not in our data.
  • 07:15 EUR French Flash Manufacturing PMI: forecast 50.5, previous 50.3.
  • 07:15 EUR French Flash Services PMI: forecast 50.7, previous 51.4.
  • 07:30 EUR German Flash Manufacturing PMI: forecast 53.5, previous 53.8.
  • 07:30 EUR German Flash Services PMI: forecast 52.5, previous 52.9.
  • 08:30 GBP Flash Manufacturing PMI: forecast 51.8, previous 52.0.
  • 08:30 GBP Flash Services PMI: forecast 51.8, previous 51.7.
  • 13:45 USD Flash Manufacturing PMI: forecast 55.4, previous 57.0.
  • 13:45 USD Flash Services PMI: forecast 57.9, previous 58.7.
  • 14:00 USD Revised UoM Consumer Sentiment: forecast 46.3, previous 46.3.
  • 14:00 USD Revised UoM Inflation Expectations: previous 4.7%, no forecast given.

The European releases arrive around the London open, when liquidity tends to rise. If the euro-area numbers beat forecasts, EUR/USD could firm, which would normally ease dollar pressure on gold. Weaker readings would do the opposite.

The US releases at 13:45 and 14:00 UTC land in the New York crossover. Both US PMIs are forecast to ease from the prior month, so a result above forecast could support the dollar. The inflation expectations figure, previously 4.7%, is worth watching because it feeds into rate expectations. For timing ideas, read about trading the London and New York open.
